Contests for Students

The following is a list of contests currently available for students to participate in.
Please e-mail jcoyne@sevenhillscharter.org if you know of other contests for our students to participate in.

Contest Name Description Deadline Grade Level
2007 Middle School Art Contest The theme of this year’s art contest is optimism. Think about what optimism means to you. Think about times when you have felt optimistic about something. Think about examples of optimism during WWII (a speech by President Roosevelt or Winston Churchill, a photograph of confident young soldiers, a poster encouraging people to grow Victory gardens or buy War Bonds, the writings of a teenage girl hiding in a secret annex in Amsterdam). Read portions or all of Anne Frank’s diary. Create a work of art based on examples you find of optimism during WWII. It can be a realistic depiction or an abstract representation, in color or black and white, you can use pencil, pen, crayons, markers, paint, or collage. It must be original, but you can incorporate existing WWII images. March 30 5-8
NASA Space Shuttle Contest This annual contest, co-sponsored by NASA Ames and the National Space Society (NSS) is for 6-12th graders (11-18 years old) from anywhere in the world. Individuals, small teams of two to six, and large teams of seven or more (often whole classrooms with teacher leadership) may enter. Grades 6-9 and 10-12 are judged separately, except for the grand prize. Students develop space settlement designs and related materials. These are sent to NASA Ames for judgement. March 31 6-8
Josten's Photo Contest Each photo will be judged on its ability to tell a story relevant to the high school, junior high or middle school experience. We'll be looking at composition, artistic and emotional qualities; as well as technical quality. April 2 5-8
National Americanism Poster Contest Theme: Yorktown. Posters will be judged on how well they express the theme, their originality, artistic merit, and other criteria. June 1 4-5
Kindness and Justice Challenge At SHCPS, students will be given paper “bricks” to be recognized for committing kind or just acts. Any students receiving at least ten “bricks” will have an opportunity to paint a real brick as part of our kindness and justice mural. The class who has the most students who earn ten bricks will get to participate in a special fieldtrip. Additionally, the grade level who earns the most points will win an item such as a printer, digital camera, scanner or desktop copier for the classroom. Ongoing K-8
Newsletter Challenges Read every weekly school newsletter carefully. Find spelling mistakes and/or complete the challenges by the next school day to earn a Dress Down Day. Weekly K-8
